It’s time again for THE AMV competition of the year!
This year we have something very special to offer you. A category contest!
What will change for you and your AMV project? Nothing changes, only how this is evaluated in its own edited focus. The strengths of your video will now be rewarded more!
But if you’re just starting to make AMVs, we won’t throw you into the witches’ cauldron, but will give you your own beginners’ section.
Basic information on the AMV competition:
- Exclusive competition (AMV may only be published after the competition)
- No thematic competition
- Deadline on 13.10.2024 at 23:59
- “Beginners” take part in the beginners section
- “Advanced/Professionals/Veterans/etc.” take part in the category section, of which 3 categories must be selected.
- Video length max. 5 minutes
- Age rating FSK 16
Rules specific to beginners
- You have not yet won an AMV competition or have edited less than 4 AMVs? Then we offer you this section as a beginner! This should provide a space for all new editors to compete fairly with similar levels of knowledge.
- In this category, the winners are determined with the help of an overall assessment. There will be no subdivision into categories here.
Category-specific rules
- All participants who are not beginners take part here.
- Your AMV will automatically take part in the decision of the overall winner of YuniCon! Additional prizes will be decided on the basis of the categories. Apart from the audience award, each video can only receive one nomination.
- When you register, you decide in which categories your video fits best or where you would like to compete. You have to choose three existing ones. These categorical assignments can sometimes be difficult because very often an AMV represents several focal points. That’s why we help you to make the decision as easily as possible.
- 12 categories, 3 of which must be selected. All categories are listed with headings, so read through the descriptions to see what is included.
- The competition management reserves the right to correct incorrectly assigned categories.
Category explanation
Questions about the categories are answered here. Many were grouped together so that the field of participants was not extremely divided.
Categories have been combined, but ONLY one of the declared categories must be fulfilled. For example, you have to do not fulfill all areas of the “Good Vibes” category, but only at least one (e.g. Dance).
Practical example: I have finished editing an AMV. I send it in and select 3 of the 12 available categories. My finished video reflects the theme of Halloween and tells a story. I think the idea of the AMV is very original and it is very involved in current issues. Now several things apply, but I can only choose 3 categories. One takes here e.g. (horror, narrative and relevance).
- Best Visual Effects
Videos that are characterized by creative and technically impressive visual effects. - Best originality
Unique and original concepts and implementations are the focus here. - Best Editing
Videos that impress with skillful editing, transitions and processing. - Relevance
Videos that either pick up on current trends or deal with timeless topics. - Action
Videos that present action-packed scenes and dynamic moments. - Good Vibes
Comedy, good mood or dance videos that shine with humor and positive vibes - Romantic Drama
Drama or romance videos that offer emotional depth and dramatic or romantic story arcs. - Horror
Horror/psychedelic videos that create a spooky or psychedelic atmosphere. - Narrative
Story/character profile Videos that convince through a captivating plot or the portrayal of characters. - Ambient
Instrumental/Atmospheric Videos that convince through instrumental music or atmosphere. - Other Sources
GMV/MMV/Trailer/Multiple Sources Videos that have been combined as GamingMusicVideo or MangaMusicVideo or from different sources or include the presentation of a trailer. - Wildcard
Austrian music/multi-editor project/wildcard videos that either use Austrian music, were created as a multi-editor project or cannot be used as a wildcard for any category at all.
General rules and regulations
Rules for the video
- Video material:
The video material may consist of anime, games and any other type of animation (cartoons, Disney, stop-motion, etc.). However, it should be noted that the main focus is on the topic of “Anime and Japanese/Asian culture”. We do not wish to exclude Western animation from the contest, but we reserve the right to reject video material if it strays too far from this main focus (e.g. Western video games with no recognizable anime style, Hollywood films with no connection to Japanese/Asian culture, etc.).
It is permitted to use alternative material (this includes, for example: Live action, material not matching the above rule and AI images & videos). However, this may only be present in a maximum of ⅓ of the total video length.
If you are unsure whether certain video material is permitted, you are welcome to ask us at any time. - Prohibited material:
As the competition has an age rating of FSK16, the finished video must not contain any content with a higher age rating. You can check the age rating for your video material on the FSK website (https://www.fsk.de/freigaben). If an anime does not yet have an FSK rating, you can use the Japanese age rating as a guide, which you can usually find via a Google search. If you are unsure about the age rating, please feel free to contact us.
Of course, video material with a higher age rating can also be used, provided that the finished AMV censors the problematic scenes enough to guarantee an age rating of FSK16. Conversely, the video material should not be edited in such a way that an FSK16 release is exceeded. - Technical requirements:
The video must have a minimum resolution of 720p and must be submitted in a 16:9, 21:9 or 4:3 format. By default, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 is recommended, which corresponds to a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Furthermore, the video file should be playable with a standard video player (e.g. VLC Player). The following file formats are suitable for this: MP4, AVI, MKV and MPEG. - Reuse of AMVs:
The video must consist exclusively of your own clips and may not contain any content from AMVs from other editors. - Subtitles / watermarks / third-party logos:
Third-party logos, watermarks and subtitles should be removed from the original material to the best of your ability, as this could have a negative impact on the rating.
However, if the concept of your video requires one of these things, then this rule is of course not relevant for you. - Intro / Outro:
During the contest, all important information about the video and editor is displayed to the best of our ability (usually as a slider). Additional credit is therefore neither necessary nor desirable.
Rules for submission
- Correctness of the submission:
All details of the video material and music used must be correct to the best of your knowledge when submitting the video. - Download link:
We ask you to send the video via a file hosting service (e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.).
Please note, however, that you often have to share the link to share the video first so that it can be used by other people. - Number of entries:
Only one AMV entry per participant and cooperation project is permitted. However, passive assistance or feedback does not count as active collaboration on a cooperation project, which means that the editor in question may of course also send in their own video. - Late entries:
The closing date for entries is stated in the rules above. It is important to stick to them.
Other rules
- Breach of rules:
The competition management reserves the right to disqualify an entry in the event of a breach of the rules.
